When we look at Herzberg’s Hygiene Theory, Herzberg proposed that there’s two factors
that influence employee motivation. So, we have our motivators, and, over here, we have
our hygiene factors. When we look at our motivators, these are the value adds that we can bring
to our workplace as leaders and managers. Things like recognition, achievement, advancement
and growth. This is where responsibility and job challenge can be built into job profiles
for individuals. These things really really can help motivate people. Generally, these
factors very much create the opportunity to increase motivation within our employees. Now over here, if we look at the hygiene factors,
hygiene factors are those basic things. When we consider working conditions, our policies
and administration, things like salary and benefits, supervision, our status within organizations,
job security, the co-workers in the environment that’s created. An individual’s personal
life that exists within the organization. These hygiene factors are actually not motivating,
they’re not motivating factors. But they can be considered de-motivating factors. These
factors can have all of the opportunity to decrease the motivation of individuals. So
let’s just note that: potentially demotivating. As a leader and manager, we have to look how
we can not only motivate our individuals, but how we can potentially demotivate them.
And if we don’t take care of these basics, we’ll lose that individual, and we won’t
even get the opportunity to potentially motivate them, retain them longer, inspire them to
great performances. So we have to keep track of thee hygiene factors, these basic factors
to be able to even motivate an individual to their top performance. And if we don’t,
we’ll see a higher absenteeism, higher turnover within our organizations. So consider them
both, but understand the risks that we run by not taking care of the basic hygiene of
our individuals.

  1. If the hygiene factors have the potential to demotivate, why would they not also have the potential to motivate?
